Managing Health Risk

Health Risk Management

As a country, are we facing a health care crisis? Or is a health crisis our real problem?

The American health care system is a brilliant body repair shop. When you’re broken, there is nowhere on earth you’d rather be.

3-principles-note1

Our system trains and compensates doctors to treat you once you’re sick – not to keep you well. The reality is, however, that to save money… maximize productivity… get the most from your employees… and control health care costs, we simply must create a culture of prevention and diligence around managing chronic health conditions.

We must manage our health risks to avoid health crises.

Undoubtedly, you’ve heard this before. But the LivingWell program places employers in a position to actually succeed where we as individuals and as a country we have failed.

To create a culture of prevention and personal responsibility for managing our health, we need three things that until have been missing for most of us:

  1. Knowledge: We need to understand precisely what threatens the future of our health – understanding that can only be achieved through a health risk assessment that includes lab and biometric measures. And we must be literate with respect to our own health risks and how to manage them.
  2. Convenience: We’re a society demands convenience. You’re not going to leave work for a half of a day to address a health symptom you can tolerate. Access to preventive care must be convenient and respectful of working people’s time if we expect people to use it.
  3. Motivation: Personal health management may be the only area in our lives in which we’re not required (or even expected) to exercise personal responsibility. Without consequences, people generally will not summons the discipline to change their behavior – even when it serves their long-term best interest.

The LivingWell program solves #1 and #2. No one enters the program without a true understanding of their health risks. And our Cooperative clinics ensure unprecedented access to convenient preventive care.

The reason that we only offer this program through employers is that without the help of the company, we cannot motivate people to change their behavior. Employers are in the unique position to financially motivate positive change among their employees. In a manner that protects individual privacy, LivingWell provides the structure and the insight to implement the employer’s incentive program.
